The $100 million veteran was benched after making an unacceptable remark. Without pressing much on the details, manager Rob Thomson had expressed, “I just thought last night he made an inappropriate comment after he came out, and so today, he’s not going to play. And I’m going to leave it at that.”
Later, Nick Castellanos also owned up to the instance himself. “He [Thomson] told me I crossed a line—so, I’m not playing. That’s my punishment.” After this clubhouse rift, just a fortnight later, Castellanos became a hot name in trade rumors. As we’re just a few days away from the deadline, the word around potential trades is heating up more than ever.
And guess what? The Phillies happen to be involved in a lot of them. There’s one trade that, if it materializes, would mean the Phillies will be offloading a major piece from their active roster.

Yes, it’s Nick Castellanos. Apparently, he’s been drawing a significant interest across the league. Especially from the Kansas City Royals. Jon Heyman from the New York post adressed it too. He said that if the Phillies make Castellanos available, then the Royals wouldn’t flinch to acquire him.
The 33 year old has held a slash line of .269/.310/.432 with a .742 OPS. And if the Phillies go ahead and part ways with Castellanos, it would free up some money. As a result, the team will be able to get another player who’s under contract for some time. If not that, then there’s a high likelihood that they call up young prospect Justin Crawford to reshuffle their outfield lineup.
If the Castellanos ’trade materializes, then except for the outfield, the Phillies will also have to look for the offense he provides. That suggests that it’s a bit unlikely that the Phillies will trade him at this deadline. When it was the Phillies’ turn, Castellanos gave some insight later about the tone of the meeting. Apparently, he labelled the discussion as “passionate.” The talks occasionally escalated “enough for players to express some version of ‘well, in that case, you can leave.’”
The most significant concern that was discussed was the salary cap. After the present Collective Bargaining Agreement expires in December, the whole idea of a salary cap is anticipated to be an implicit focus of the contention. The players have time and again pushed back against such limitations. As per them, it’s a massive threat to their financial freedom.
