Phillies Told to Pursue $8.7M Dodgers Linked Star to Elevate Harper-Castellanos Led Offense

As the Phillies navigate a rough patch this season, their offense has largely failed to ignite. Except for Nick Castellanos (.287) and Bryce Harper (.258), who have emerged as the rare bright spots, carrying much of the offensive weight on their shoulders. But with the trade deadline looming, the Phillies are well aware they need another solid presence at the plate to help shoulder the burden.

Now, a familiar name, one that was previously linked with the Dodgers, is reportedly on the Phillies’ radar. This potential acquisition could be the much-needed reinforcement to give Castellanos the support he deserves. Moreover, it may help revitalize a dwindling offense heading into the critical stretch of the season.

MLB insider Evan Macy reckons the Orioles’ Cedric Mullins may be a good choice for the Phillies to alter their outfield dynamic.

Mullins posted a respectable .263 batting average between 2018 and 2022. But over the past three seasons, his average has dipped to .232. So, it might be a gamble for the Phillies, who are seeking offensive consistency from their outfield.

But Mullins’ speed remains a difference-maker, as shown by his 32 stolen bases in 2024. Moreover, despite a modest .227/.318/.438 slash line so far this season, he is showing signs of resurgence at the plate.

Mullins has already launched 10 home runs, making him one of only six centerfielders to hit double digits in homers this year. His combination of speed and defense is exactly the kind of disruptive energy Phillies need behind Castellanos.

The Phillies have their sights set on contending in the National League, but their outfield production? It’s underwhelming apart from Castellanos and Bryce Harper, particularly in center and left field. So, Mullins is quite clearly a good option for them.

However, they may face the Dodgers’ challenge in their bid to get their hands on the Orioles outfielder. Reportedly, the Dodgers are also pursuing Mullins, given the fact that Michael Conforto has been underperforming.

With the Orioles’ downward spiral in the standings, it’s very likely they’ll entertain offers for expiring contracts. Mullins, set to hit free agency at season’s end, fits that bill perfectly. And, if he is available, it presents a good chance for the Phillies to up their offense without breaking the bank.

The Orioles’ rough patch is a hope for the Phillies

Well, the Orioles have been one of the biggest disappointments in MLB this season. It has been a spectacular downfall after back-to-back stellar campaigns that saw them post the most regular-season wins in the AL.

The Orioles now find themselves near the bottom of the standings, struggling to regain any form of consistency. Currently sitting with a 27-40 record, they are very unlikely to get a postseason berth. And here comes the opportunity for the Phillies!

With the trade deadline looming, the Orioles would be wise to hit the reset button and consider a team rebuild. It might look like a loss for them to trade their leading performer in Mullins, but from a team rebuild point of view, it does make sense.

With the Phillies offering good value, a potential deal might be on the cards. But the Dodgers might come up with a better alternative as well.

Also, the Orioles may have a ready-made successor potentially waiting in the wings. Enrique Bradfield Jr – Baltimore’s first-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, is making noise in Double-A.

With the Orioles serious about retooling for the future, this is the moment to cash in on assets like Mullins. For the Phillies, nothing could be better than strengthening their offense.
