Thursday evening’s matchup at Comerica Park spiraled further out of control during the doubleheader between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Detroit Tigers. The game was locked in a 4-4 tie in the ninth inning when it was abruptly halted because of weather conditions. However, even before that, things got heated on the field and in the stands. At the center of it was a Pirates’ reliever.
Dennis Santana found himself in a heated confrontation with a fan who was seated right above the bullpen. Turns out, the fan had been loudly ridiculing the players.

It immediately infuriated Santana. He walked towards the fan, jumped up and tried to take a swing at him. Soon enough, as soon as his teammates took notice, they rushed over and escorted Santana straight to the clubhouse.
The game still continued and the Tigers eventually secured the 9-2 win against the Pirates in the first game of the doubleheader.
As soon as this incident happened, it quickly made its way to the internet. The heated confrontation was recorded from various angles and it spread among millions. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates are yet to issue an official statement about the incident.
Coming to Santana, he’s currently in his eighth major league season. With the Pirates, it’s just his second season. Across 31 appearances, he’s recorded a stunning 1.74 ERA with 25 strikeouts. He’s usually grabbing the headlines for his impressive numbers but this time it’s different.
The Pirates will certainly open up about this incident soon; till then, what do you think—was Santana’s reaction justified?
