Given what transpired during the last few weeks, on the face of it, doors were all but closed on the Ryan Garcia–Devin Haney rematch. But in comes a tweet from Garcia that could potentially stir up the conversation on the second fight with Haney.
On May 2, hitching a ride on a Batmobile, Ryan Garcia reached the Times Square’s makeshift arena, where Rolando Romero awaited him. But for all the drama, the boxing superstar’s comeback fight proved most anticlimactic when Romero handed him a humiliating defeat. For Garcia, who completed his year-long suspension last month, it was supposed to be an easy win. And a ticket for the much-anticipated rematch with Haney. If only the loss had been the sole hurdle. Oscar De La Hoya and Bill Haney‘s recent comments fueled fresh speculations over its chances. So amidst this confusion, Garcia, who underwent hand surgery two days ago, attempting to reignite hopes of a rematch might come as a surprise to many.

“Let’s do it, Bill; you still need this get back, correct?” Ryan Garcia’s latest tweet read. Actually, he was responding to Bill Haney’s tweet. Haney Sr. had been calling out Dan Rafael, who shared an update on the Teofimo Lopez-Devin Haney fight. The potential matchup has emerged as one of the best and most viable options currently.

“Doing everything to not fight Devin Haney, but of course you’re not reporting that because it doesn’t fit your narrative…. Mr. Dan NotFaReal ,” sharing his perspective, Bill Haney said after Rafael reported that the Lopez-Haney fight was ‘agreed to’ but ‘not signed’ for an August showdown. The potential clash now looks to be in jeopardy for altogether different reasons.
Garcia’s post invariably drew a string of comments. Some suggested that he should first set the record straight by rematching Rolly Romero. However, a few, including ‘Cigar Talk‘s Naji Chill, suggested a tune-up fight first before Garcia embarks on his next big project.
In fact, the Rolly rematch is also one that his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, pointed at recently.
But for the odds it faces
When probed for a second fight with Rolando Romero, De La Hoya told a group of reporters, “Well, as a fighter speaking to you as a fighter, not a promoter, that’s exactly what I would do, right? So, um, that would be the right move for him, I think. Um, you know, go get revenge.”

Just a few minutes before, he spilled the beans on the Haney rematch as well. “No, that’s not the direction we want to go. Um, zero whatsoever.” If that was not enough, then on ‘Thaboxingvoice,‘ Bill made it clear where the rematch stood in his radar. “We got a hit list right now,” said Devin Haney’s father, who further added, “I’ll go all the way down to number 10 on the list, Ryan Garcia, and he’s fallen all the way to 10 because of his performance both inside and outside the ring.”
Reports suggest Ryan Garcia needs at least five to six weeks of rest before he can resume training. Once he is ready, perhaps he and the team could finally chalk out a comeback plan that should positively put his career back on track. Fans will have to watch out for further updates.
