Last year, legendary Rangers broadcaster Sam Rosen announced that he would bid adieu to the sport after the end of this season. This would mark the end of the illustrious, 40-year career of Rosen, where he became the famous voice of the team from New York. Moreover, the fans became closely associated with his voice and will miss him on the mike. While Rosen’s retirement plans left many Rangers fans dejected, the 77-year-old has already revealed his plans for a special occasion for the New York Rangers.
Next season will mark the 100th anniversary of the team, which was founded in 1926. As a result, the preparations are going on in full swing for the centenary celebrations, with the team also unveiling a commemorative logo recently. Interestingly, Rosen is also set to play a part in the centenary celebrations as he dropped a massive hint about his role in the Rangers’ 100th anniversary.
Last week, New Ice City dropped a new podcast featuring Rosen. During the conversation there, the legendary broadcaster opened up about the plans for the Rangers’ 100th anniversary celebrations. He revealed, “Next year, it’s gonna be the 100th anniversary of the Rangers and certainly, I’ll be involved in some capacity. We’ll see whatever the role, if the NHL, or the Rangers or the MSG Network, they want me to do something for them, I’ll always say yes.”
Rosen has been one of the Rangers’ longest-serving members and would likely play a massive part in the centenary celebrations next season. Recently, he was also honored by the team for his four decades of service to the Rangers. The team had planned a special ceremony for this ahead of their game against the Canucks. Additionally, Rosen also received some surprise gifts like ducks, trouba, a special painting, etc.
Even as Rosen announced his retirement plans, many fans speculated that he could feature as a broadcaster in the upcoming season, which would be the Rangers’ 100th season since their inception. However, his recent revelation quashed those rumors.
Sam Rosen stays put on his drastic retirement plans
With four decades of service, the fans have become used to hearing Rosen’s voice during the Rangers’ matches. As a result, with Rosen retiring after the end of this season, there will be a massive void created for the fans. Moreover, with the 100th season coming up for the Rangers, the fans wanted Rosen to postpone his retirement. Nonetheless, Rosen has stayed firm on his retirement.
In a conversation with Rangers reporter Vincent Z. Mercogliano, Rosen said, “I haven’t said anything in motion yet, but we’ve talked about different things. Ideas have been thrown out there. Members of my family want me to write a book. There’s been talk about maybe JD (John Davidson) and I collaborating on a podcast. I’ve talked to them; we’ve had preliminary talks with a couple of colleges in Florida, where my wife and I have a second home and I would imagine eventually I’m going to transition from New York to Florida.”
While the fans would miss Rosen’s voice during the matches, they can’t thank him enough for the years of service as the Rangers’ broadcaster. Indeed, he is one of the greatest broadcasters the NHL has ever seen.
