The 49ers are preparing to give a shock to the other 31 NFL franchises in the league. They have not signed an extension with Brock Purdy. Free agency is already here. And the rumor mill is running hot. Everyone is trying to give their 2 cents on the situation. But the quarterback and the Niners front office are unusually silent, not giving any hint about the negotiations. A San Francisco reporter has come up with an analysis of how much the quarterback could be offered.
The San Francisco Standard reporter David Lombardi came up with a unique approach to the QB contracts. He listed out different contracts signed in the last 2-3 years and took the %age of the team cap space. Based on calculations, the reporter predicted that Brock Purdy would get a contract for $58-68 million per year. That’s big. Here’s what the recently signed QB contracts look like.
Joe burrow
This year, the cap space for the NFL teams is $279.2 million. It was $208.2 million in 2022, $224.8 million in 2023, and $255.4 million in 2024. Now, these numbers will help us compare the deals. The Bengals signed Joe Burrow to a 5-year $275 million deal, averaging $55 million per year. That’s 24.5% of the cap space in 2023.
The Cowboys QB, Dak Prescott, is signed to a 4-year $240 million deal. The average, $60 million per year, comes to around 21.9% of the cap space. So, things have moved at an electric speed. The lowest of these contracts was the Lions deal with Jared Goff. He signed a 4-year $212 million deal last year. That’s 20.8%. So, Lombardi’s logic seems believable.
Brock Purdy took the Niners to Super Bowl LVIII in 2023. But last season, in the absence of some key weapons, he failed to even take them into the playoffs. That plays a huge role in the contract decision as well. Also, there is no guarantee that Brock Purdy will also get a deal in that range based on past deals alone. While defending the quarterback for an elite deal, the reporter got himself into a social media beef.
Brock Purdy causes trouble on social media
If you regularly follow Lombardi on X and even his YouTube videos, he is a big-time supporter of the 49ers QB. He has been claiming for many days that the 49ers need to give him a premium deal. In a bid to support his claim, he tweeted that Brock Purdy was an A-list QB. But media opinions were divided.
SI’s Grant Cohn took offense to these claims. He pointed out Lombardi’s past opinions and replied, “You said Jimmy Garoppolo is an A-list QB. Now he’s a backup QB for the Rams.” In 6 seasons with the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo took them into the playoffs twice. But when Purdy replaced him, he moved to the Raiders in 2023, followed by the Rams in 2024.
With this scathing attack, things got personal. The NFL has been heated this year. Particularly when it comes to the quarterbacks. We saw it last month during the combine when Jordan Schultz and Ian Rapoport got into a beef over Matthew Stafford‘s meeting with Tom Brady and a potential move to the Raiders. They even yelled some cuss words at each other before the security intervened and separated them. Brock Purdy has always been dividing media.
Analysts have claimed that he is more of a system quarterback than being the standout/standalone leader the 49ers need. This year, there have been conflicting reports about his contract extension. And these will not stop until they finally sign a deal. Where do you think Purdy stacks up in the ranking of NFL QBs?
