“I promise you we are just trying to position the board the best we can, and let’s get as many good football players. We know we need to be strong up front, and we’re trying to have as many weapons.” That’s what Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane said at the NFL owners’ meetings down in Florida. With the 2025 NFL Draft right around the corner, it’s clear Sean McDermott and his crew are gearing up to add talent on both sides of the ball. The real question is which position are they looking to lock down first?
The Bills have some real holes they need to patch up in the draft. First, there’s a cornerback position, as Rasul Douglas left the team this offseason. So, now there’s a big opening that needs filling. Then, there’s the defensive line. It took a hit because both Michael Hoecht and Larry Ogunjobi are facing six-game suspensions for substance use. That’s a problem they can’t ignore. Safety is another area where help is needed. Same with wide receiver. Hence, the Bills have to find answers at all these positions through the draft. But as per reporter Sal Capaccio’s prediction, Sean McDermott’s team is likely to go for defensive men first. Yes! Ignoring Josh Allen’s needs for a while.
During a new episode of WGR SportsRadio550, Capaccio joined the hosts Joe DiBiase and Derek Kramer to talk about the upcoming draft for McDermott’s team. Expressing his opinion, the Bills’ reporter predicted: “What I said, and I’ll say it again, is at this point, I’d be surprised if it’s anything other than defense (in) the first three picks. Now it we don’t know the Bills board, and I always say like, sure, the Bills could really fall in love with a wide receiver that he happens to drop, they take him, and I don’t mean first round, though. I think I find that very hard to see. I mean, if there’s that, if he’s that good, I think another team would grab a guy who’s falling like that wide receiver.”
So, now, if you take the receiver idea out of the picture, Capaccio really believes it’s going to be all about defense. That’s if the Bills stay close to where they’re currently picking. If they trade back and end up with later picks, then maybe they consider a receiver somewhere down the line. All in all, if Sean McDermott’s team has a pick around where they are now, the reporter thinks it’ll be defense for the first three picks. He doesn’t expect the Bills to draft anyone on offense until at least Day 3. So, if the defense is the only starting game for the Highmark team, which position would they like to go for first?
Answering the same, Capaccio stated that when it comes to the kind of defensive players, it’ll be heavy on the defensive line first, then a little attention to the secondary, probably the cornerback. He’s not really buying into the idea of taking two secondary guys early. He feels it’s more like two D-linemen and one corner. And as for safety? Sal Capaccio says he’s never really been sold on the idea that the Bills would grab one early. Maybe they draft a safety later, but only if the right guy starts falling.
Overall, judging by the way the roster is built and the conversations Capaccio had, he thinks the Bills will walk out of their first three picks with two defensive linemen and a cornerback slotted. Well, it could be true, as per multiple mock drafts, players like CB Maxwell Hairston, DT Tyleik Williams are considered as top choices for the Bills. Furthermore, the team is also a bit relaxed due to their recent addition.
Sean McDermott tried to help Josh Allen with a popular WR
The Bills are stacked with talent, good enough to stand tall among the NFL’s top five teams. But FOX Sports writers Henry McKenna and David Helman threw all of that out the window for a wild fantasy redraft. They wiped every roster clean and started fresh based on the 2025 draft order. With the 30th pick, the Bills snagged $96 million Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, a beast who somehow slid under the radar last season because of Philly’s run-heavy offense.
Helman made it clear that ignoring Brown is a mistake. It’s because even at 28, he’s still a star. He dominates in the red zone, winning contested catches, and making magic after the catch. So, Sean McDermott has already cleared a WR path for MVP QB Josh Allen at least for a while.
Then the order flipped for round two, and Buffalo struck gold again, grabbing Lions pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson at 35. Helman admitted he already regretted letting Hutchinson fall that far. It’s because without the injury last season, he might’ve been the Defensive Player of the Year. Sure, the Bills still need a quarterback in this made-up world. But starting off with a top wideout and a young, elite pass rusher? And CB could also be a great idea to go with at first.
Nevertheless, the best part is, in real life, the Bills don’t have to tear it all down. They just need to find the right pieces in next week’s draft!
