Sean O’Malley Drops 4 Words for Merab Dvalishvili as Dana White Hands 67 Days Notice for UFC 316

Sean O’Malley is officially set to redeem himself. Following months of speculation, Dana White has revealed that O’Malley will face Merab Dvalishvili for the UFC Bantamweight Championship at UFC 316 on June 7 in Newark, New Jersey. This is surely a rematch that ‘Suga’ was waiting for, so fans waited with bated breath to see what he had to say about the announcement. Now, finally, Sean O’Malley has broken his silence over the fight. So, what did he say? Well, he preferred firing some warning shots toward Merab Dvalishvili.

O’Malley took to Instagram and shared the fight’s official poster with a short but powerful warning: “See you June 7th.” The four-word statement may appear simple, but the intent is clear—he’s coming to reclaim the throne that was once his. Their first fight was a nightmare for ‘Suga,’ with Dvalishvili using relentless wrestling to shut him down. As a result, many fans even wondered if the UFC would choose a newcomer like Petr Yan instead, but O’Malley’s star power made a rematch pretty inevitable.

The former champion now has the opportunity to rewrite history, but the task is clear: he has to prove that he has made the required modifications to avoid another overwhelming defeat. He has to bring changes, and he has to bring them quick. After all, this announcement comes only 67 days before fight night, giving both fighters little time to prepare.  ‘The Machine’ has been an active champion since defeating O’Malley at UFC 306 last year and successfully defended his title against Umar Nurmagomedov in January. Meanwhile, O’Malley has been healing from hip surgery and was awaiting his chance to get back into the Octagon.

However, facing Dvalishvili won’t be an easy feat. In fact, he seems almost unfazed by the rematch announced by Dana White. On an 11-fight winning streak, ‘The Machine’ shows no signs of slowing down. His win against Nurmagomedov earlier this year fueled his momentum, and he’s ready to establish himself as the undisputed king at 135 pounds. While O’Malley’s striking is elite, the grappling gap between the two was vast the last time, and it has to be seen whether “Suga” has made enough progress in just a few months. But for now, the one thing we surely can tell is that O’Malley has come to terms with the UFC 306 loss to Merab Dvalishvili.

Sean O’Malley opens up on the biggest professional loss against Merab Dvalishvili

Sean O’Malley may have gotten the rematch, but that does not mean he has forgotten what happened at UFC 306. The night was supposed to be a showcase for his striking, a bout that would solidify his legend. Instead, Merab Dvalishvili smothered, outmuscled, and overpowered him. While ‘Suga’ has since launched verbal jibes at ‘The Machine,’ their first encounter revealed a key flaw in his strategy. Now, months later, he’s speaking up about what went wrong that night—and what was going through his mind as it all happened.

During his TimboSugarShow podcast, O’Malley did not sugarcoat the reality. “I think it’s good to be confident in your skills, but I overpromised, underdelivered,” he said. Many of his fans thought something was wrong with his performance, but O’Malley disregarded this notion. “Best weight cut, felt good, no excuses,” he stated. “My mom was like, ‘You just weren’t the same. What was wrong?’ Nothing, I just got beat.” ‘Suga’ further revealed that what impressed him the most was Dvalishvili’s physical strength. “I felt out-strengthed. I didn’t feel out-skilled or out-speed. Cardio was good. He was just stronger.” O’Malley had expected a striking duel but instead spent the majority of the fight stuck beneath his opponent, unable to stop him.

The defeat couldn’t have been on a bigger stage. UFC 306 at the Sphere was supposed to propel him to superstardom, but it instead became his biggest professional setback. At the time, he was considering taking an extended sabbatical from the sport. “I probably won’t fight for nine months, 10 months, maybe a year,” he said back then. But, with UFC 316 just around the corner, that perspective has definitely shifted. Sean O’Malley understands what’s at stake this time: either he makes the required modifications and reclaims his title, or ‘Suga’ risks falling behind in the bantamweight division for good. What do you think? Will he be able to defeat ‘The Machine’ this time around? Let us know in the comments.
