Shane Beamer Answers Biggest QB Concerns for South Carolina With Positive LaNorris Sellers Update

The Gamecocks’ Spring Game, set for April 18, will be the grand finale of their 14 spring practices. As of now, with a roster full of fresh faces, Shane Beamer highlighted the team’s excitement and smooth preparation through January and February. But in his fifth year with South Carolina, he made one thing clear—nothing is set in stone; yes, almost every position is up for grabs, especially the most talked-about one: quarterback. And now, here’s what Beamer had to say about South Carolina’s biggest QB questions.

There’s no doubt—South Carolina’s QB1, LaNorris Sellers, is a star in the making. He took the reins in 2024, leading the Gamecocks to a 9-3 season with 2,274 passing yards, and 655 rushing yards. On top of that, his breakout year earned him top honors, including SEC Freshman of the Year. But here’s the concern—the depth behind him.

Yeah, if Sellers were to go down, who steps up? It’s a question that looms large. And now, with a positive update on Sellers, Shane Beamer is ready to ease those worries.

On March 18, SportsTalk Media Network shared a video clip of Shane Beamer addressing the Gamecocks’ quarterback depth this spring. First, he reassured fans about LaNorris Sellers, saying, “Certainly, we talked about competition and no preconceived notions, all right. Well, LaNorris Sellers is going to go into spring practice as our starting quarterback, and let’s be real, it’s gonna be hard to beat him out.” And then came the big question—who’s next in line?

Beamer acknowledged the uncertainty, stating, “But I want to see those guys compete. And I don’t know exactly what it’s gonna look like in that quarterback room because we’re still very young.”

Look, here Beamer broke down the youth in South Carolina’s QB room, highlighting just how raw the depth chart is. “Dante Reno is in his second year in college. Air Noland is in his second year in college. LaNorris is in his third year in college, coming up this season. Cutter Woods is his first practice ever as a Gamecock on Wednesday. And then Jimmy Francis in that room, he’s finishing up his first year in college,” said the head coach.

However, Beamer didn’t sugarcoat it, calling it “a very, very, very, very young quarterback room.

And then, despite LaNorris Sellers having a season under his belt, Beamer reminded everyone, “LaNorris, yes, he’s got a season as the starter, but he’s still young in a lot of ways also.” And now, as for the competition, Beamer put his points across, saying, “So I want to see those guys compete, and I’ve been impressed with them.”

But Beamer didn’t stop there—he made it clear he has strong feelings about this QB room this season.

Shane Beamer’s expectation

Shane Beamer is keeping a close eye on his young quarterbacks praising their early progress. “I feel like, you know, Air has done a good job of coming in here and kind of changing his body and getting in shape, improving. And Dante, I feel like he’s taking a step. And Cutter’s really impressive. What he did in high school, he’s a winner. He’s a talented guy, without a doubt,” said Beamer.

Here, one name that stands out is Cutter Woods. At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, he brings size, skill, and a competitive edge. As a true dual-sport athlete, Woods also dominates on the basketball court, showcasing his versatility. On top of that, his stellar senior season earned him MaxPreps South Carolina Player of the Year, with 3,915 passing yards, and 42 TDs.

Right now, as spring practice looms, Beamer is eager to see them battle it out. “So we’ll throw those guys in a lot of settings and give them a lot of opportunities this spring to see how, you know, how that room shakes out, without a doubt. And that’s what I want to see, is just watch them compete and take a step here.

Now, let’s see how Beamer’s young QB room performs this season.
