“The ultimate cheat code!” That’s what Shedeur Sanders called himself during the NFL Combine in February. Later, he even said, “I could bring cameras and eyes anywhere I go. It doesn’t matter where I go. I know the influence I have on society and on culture. So wherever I go, it’s definitely going to be an improvement than what it was before I got there.” Of course, attention is nothing new to the Colorado product. After all, he is the son of Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, as well as one of this year’s top quarterback prospects. But this time, a quarterback coach expressed some interesting comments on Shedeur.
Now, as the NFL draft is right around the corner, many analysts have started making comparisons between the prospects and the NFL players. Cam Ward received a surprise Patrick Mahomes comparison. Similarly, as per QB coach Darrell Colbert Jr, Shedeur Sanders is like Cincinnati Bengals‘ QB Joe Burrow. That’s interesting indeed.
During a new episode of The Rich Eisen Show, guest host Tom Pelissero asked Colbert who he thinks Shedeur Sanders is best compared to. Without hesitation, the coach responded immediately: “Joe Burrow.” He even admitted that someone from Colorado had asked him the same question last year—and the comparison stuck with him.
Explaining the reason for his comparison, Colbert added, “Just the way Joe Burrow is always confident, always calm—Shedeur is exactly like that. He’s one of those guys who never gets too high, never gets too low.” And it’s not just personality-wise. “Joe does a great job of being accurate, understanding the system, and where the comparison really holds up is this: remember that year when Joe went to the Super Bowl? He was sacked a lot—he was the most sacked quarterback in the NFL—and he was still productive. That’s who Shedeur [Sanders] is.” Sanders’s performance sets him apart.
Colbert highlighted that defenders hit Sanders over 50 times last season. Despite that, he put up impressive numbers: 4,134 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. When comparing Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Colorado star Shedeur Sanders, both are known for their accuracy and quiet athleticism. In fact, when Burrow was coming out of college, some questioned his arm strength. But that’s exactly what set him apart in the NFL—he now boasts a 70-yard touchdown pass in his career.
Titans head coach Brian Callahan echoed the comparison, saying, “I think you can probably put Shedeur in the same conversation. They anticipate when they throw it, they have the timing and accuracy on top of it. That makes up for the arm strength.”
In short, not only does Coach Colbert see the resemblance, but Titans HC Callahan also believes Shedeur Sanders is the best comp for Joe Burrow—and more importantly, that Sanders has what it takes to thrive among the NFL’s veteran QBs.
Shedeur Sanders is perfect for any team!
No doubt, Shedeur Sanders is a flashy, run-around kind of quarterback. He is a pocket-passer, accurate and sharp. But still, due to his low athleticism and doubtful arm strength, many wonder if he will fit in the league. Hence, clearing all the doubts, during the same episode of the show, Tom Pelissero asked Darrell Colbert Jr. to clarify his points for him.
The coach confidently said, “I think as a quarterback, you want a guy like that, you want a guy who’s sure in what he can do. You want a guy who’s confident in himself, you want a guy who’s never second-guessing himself. If he’s going out there to play and you know that okay cool he’s not worried, so we’re not worried and that’s who Shedeur is,” responding to the same.
In addition, the QB coach also highlighted that Shedeur Sanders has been through a lot. They had six different offensive coordinators in four years and still managed to succeed. That says something. The young kid even holds the highest completion percentage (74.0%) in NCAA history. He’s not just confident, he knows exactly what he’s doing out there. He’s not second-guessing, not even he is panicking. Sanders is just locked in!
Furthermore, according to Colbert, Sanders is not the kind of player who ever feels out of a game. He understands the game, knows what’s happening, and stays cool under pressure. That quiet confidence? It might rub some folks the wrong way, but it’s real. And it’s part of what sets him apart.
Even with all the changes—new teams, new locker rooms—Shedeur Sanders has never been a problem. That’s why his teammates respect him: he connects with everyone effortlessly. Colbert is confident that Sanders will carry these traits into the NFL as well. When a quarterback believes in himself, the rest of the team feeds off that energy. And Sanders? He’s bringing that from day one.
