Look how the tables turned for the Michigan Wolverines! Well, it took them a lot of time to recover from the Jim Harbaugh hangover. Now they can’t be blamed. After all, it’s under the now NFL HC that the Wolverines could bag the National Championship title. So, when Sherrone Moore took over the helm, players naturally failed to trust the debut HC.
That’s when the players started to fall like dominoes. But what if you get to know that Moore is writing history in Ann Arbor? Yes, the Michigan HC’s bold move now has increased the chances of the Wolverines making it to the Playoffs this season.
How Sherrone Moore transformed Michigan
While Moore might have been too excited to fill Harbaugh’s shoes, reality struck hard! Harbaugh left Ann Arbor in a mess. Under normal circumstances, replacing a title-winning coach usually means trying to meet title-worthy expectations. Sadly, before claiming the title, Moore had to do a lot of work. Instead of making use of the transfer portal before leaving, he left Moore and Co. with a four-year show-cause penalty by the NCAA for recruiting violations. After that, little by little, Moore has brought back the program on its feet.

Well, we are aware of how the HC led the Wolverines to a strong finish in 2024, knocking off No. 2 Ohio State and No. 11 Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl. However, Moore’s real talents lie in the recruiting front. On the recruiting trail, he had his staff left no stone unturned. And guess what? They are reaping the sweet fruits of their hard work. Moore has assembled one of the top 2025 recruiting classes in the nation. That’s what the Michigan Football Report podcast host James Yoder hinted at. He said, “I’m going to talk about Sherrone Moore’s huge decision and why I think it might be the missing ingredients for what this football program has been missing really in almost 20 years.”
According to On3, Michigan has signed seven Top 100 recruits. The No.1 overall prospect, QB Bryce Underwood, and two Top 10 offensive tackles – Andrew Babalola, and Ty Haywood. Moore has landed two Top 10 safeties – Kainoa Winston, and Elijah Dotson. Don’t forget top 15 cornerback Shamari Earls and No.4 edge Nate Marshall. If you think that’s enough, Yoder points out some more recruiting wins by Moore.
“You’ve got 10 of the top 144 players so 10 players in the top 150 for this class which is absolutely huge, right? Michigan went a good stretch over the last three or four years where they didn’t gain on that recruiting momentum,” shared the analyst. Now that does promise something big. As 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford noted, “Expect the Wolverines to be better in 2025 and potentially be in College Football Playoff contention by November.” Yes, with this, the HC got that boost. Now, he thought of experimenting a bit too.
Sherrone Moore adds a unique touch to his roster
In case the Wolverines fans feel that snatching Underwood away from Brian Kelly has been Moore’s biggest flex, hold on tighter! Almost 25 Michigan players have swapped wagons in this transfer season. While filling the gaps, the HC might have thought of trying his luck in experimenting with a dual-sport player. That’s when he turned heads by landing a new player with a very famous first name and his association with another popular US sport.
It’s none other than Texas State transfer Beckham Sunderland, the Wolverines’ third kicker of the season. For quite some time now, Moore had been looking to fill the gap ever since Michigan lost their punter Tommy Doman to the Florida Gators. Now what made Moore count on Sunderland? Has to be his strong resume.
The Kentucky native finished up the 2024 season at Texas State, appearing in two games where he went one-for-one on extra points. Not to forget his eight kickoff record for 530 yards (66.3-yard average) with six touchbacks. The nephew of the former Michigan kicker and top trainer Brandon Kornblue did succeed in another role too. He was the goalkeeper for FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer. Beckham Sunderland participated in 14 career matches with 12 starts in the MLS Next Pro. Now it’s clear why Sherrone Moore should now wear the crown as the new king of recruitment.
