Just a week ago, the predictions for the potential, or let’s say, the eventual fight between Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson was 50-50! Now, however, Davis himself has managed to change everyone’s perspective on that fight. The legendary trainer behind several high-profile fighters, Robert Garcia, seems to feel the same way! And not just Davis, Garcia seems to have the same opinion about a fight between Stevenson and Lamont Roach Jr.
Last Saturday night, Davis and Roach went toe-to-toe in New York for what most people believed would be a walk in the park for ‘Tank’ Davis. However, ‘The Reaper’ was hiding a secret. Roach intended to derail Davis’ decorated boxing career. And to the surprise of everyone, he succeeded. While Roach could not win the fight, which, by the way, many think he did, Roach pushed Davis to his limits like no one has managed to do before. This resulted in a majority decision draw.
However, it’s worth mentioning that Davis had voluntarily taken a knee during the fight, which went unscored, and the NYSAC is currently reviewing it. This could potentially overturn the decision in Roach’s favor. Regardless, right after the fight ended, Shakur Stevenson hopped on X to reveal that if Davis didn’t offer Roach Jr. a rematch, he would welcome a fight with Roach for his WBC title with open arms.

Fast forward to today, Robert Garcia appeared in an interview with ES News, where he shared his predictions for a fight between Stevenson and Roach/Davis, or both. “You know what, I think the way the fight went, I think Shakur probably beats both of them,” Garcia confidently declared during the interview.
Meanwhile, Garcia also shed light on what may have gone wrong for Gervonta Davis, causing him to perform badly against Roach Jr.

Before the fight on Saturday, reports revealed that Calvin Ford wasn’t training Davis for the Lamont Roach fight. Instead, Barry Hunter had taken Ford’s place for the particular fight. However, there was no reported feud between the fighter and trainer, which had caused the temporary separation.
Regardless, when Garcia was asked about what Davis should do in a rematch with Roach Jr., he said, “I don’t know. I think he’s had much better performances. I don’t know if it [were] personal problems. There are problems with the trainer, right? Something’s going on.”

Garcia pointed to a now-viral moment caught on camera after the fight where Garcia walked past Ford, and people speculated he was ignoring him. “Maybe there was problems going on, maybe camp didn’t go as good because of problems,” Garcia added.
“That s**t, those are distractions, things that happen in boxing that give you bad performances. Maybe that’s the case. I think Tank’s much better than that … [but] I told Roach after the fight, ‘Congratulations, you did a great f***ing job.’”
That said, it took only one bad fight for people to change their predictions for the potential Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson fight. This perfectly portrays why Davis needs to fight Roach again and prove it was just a bad day at the office. Do you agree with Robert Garcia?
