One of the many perpetual storylines that accentuate football is how often the baton gets passed on in the family. There are a plethora of royal lineages that have graced the sport. Skill passed on generationally, keeping intact and adding to their last name’s imprint on it. The Mannings stand out, and the Sanders are one of the more topical ones. One player, who has inherited a legacy and is hoping to etch his family’s name into this group, has been faced with a weird roadblock.
We’re well and truly in the era where news gets bumped primarily through social media. One of the things this means is that it travels fast. Fair or fallacious, things spread across the airwaves at lightspeed. So when a prominent IG account made an error in relaying information about said player, he had to quickly step in and nip things in the bud. Information that was meant to endorse him and his rise through the high school ranks, but could’ve wound up initiating more confusion than cosigns.
The player in question is Julius Jones Jr. Entering his junior year in high school, the WR is poised to ascend to the collegiate ranks in 2027. He’s, quite obviously, the son of retired NFL vet Julius Jones. I mean, there’s not much ground for mistaking the relationship between the two once the name is disclosed. But turns out, this wasn’t apparent enough to the official @247Sports IG handle. They posted a multi-slide graphic over a very interesting premise: “Notable Legacies” in the class of ‘27. Julius Jones, the 20th-ranked wideout in the class, naturally made the list. But his relationship to his dad was detailed erroneously.
The post mentions Julius Jones Jr. is the “cousin of former NFL RB Julius Jones.” Quite the proof-reading blunder within such a well-thought-out and designed graphic. This wasn’t even the only mistake on the graphic. Keon Sabb, the older brother of the featured Xavier Sabb, had the incorrect picture associated with his name. Jones Jr. took matters into his own hands to dispel the false identity he was labelled with.
“That’s my dad ,” he commented under the aforementioned IG post. The comment has since gained plenty of traction and engagement, too. 247Sports had a novel idea in mind, promoting kids who are potentially going to be household names in a couple of years. But the execution and how things transpired didn’t reciprocate that idea. There’s still merit to he list, though, sans the odd mistake. It shouts out 15 families who’ve got A) members who’ve either left their mark on the sport and B) members who are hoping to. Julius Jones Jr. can still take solace from the fact that he was among some very big names, past and present.
Julius Jones Jr. joins elite company, including but not limited to Travis Hunter and Garrett Nussmeier’s brothers
One of the names 247Sports brought to the forefront was Colton Nussmeier. The No. 4-ranked quarterback in his class, he comes from a storied lineage of signal callers. Colton is the brother of LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier. A stud in his own right. He’s the son of Doug Nussmeier, the newly hired offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. Having just come off winning the Super Bowl as the QBs coach for the Eagles. Some of this acumen was bound to permeate through to his sons, and it has.
Another player mentioned is Trayvis Hunter, the brother of Heisman recipient Travis Hunter. Trayvis doesn’t quite meddle on both sides of the football like 2-way phenom Travis. But he’s also a WR, and runs a mean route. Something which was evident during the recently concluded OT7 camp. Speaking of wide receivers, national champ Jeremiah Smith’s brother, Angelo Smith, also made the club. He’s a safety, though. A dynamic that may have come about from defending Jeremiah growing up. Or trying to! Jaxson Dart’s brother, Diesel Dart, is also mentioned. Akin to Jaxson, he’s a quarterback.
Julius Jones Jr. probably may feel a little bittersweet, hard done by. His moment in the sun, which doesn’t come around all that often for a high school junior, got blemished by a minute yet avoidable mistake. But what’s more important is that he lives up to the legacy his dad has put in place. Traverse the trail he blazed. He sure is capable. Keep an eye out for Jones Jr. and the other names, for you’ll be coming across them much more often down the line.
