Last year in April, Ryan Garcia shocked the boxing world by toppling Devin Haney—a feat few thought possible amid concerns over Garcia’s social media eruptions. Their fiery rivalry reached its boiling point when ‘King Ryan’ snatched the spotlight with a dominant win, only for the celebration to crash down after he missed weight for the bout and even tested positive for Ostarine. The verdict was overturned to a No-Contest, and Garcia was slapped with a one-year suspension and a hefty fine by the New York State Athletic Commission.
Now, a year later, the buzz of a rematch is building, but before that, the duo has their respective challenges to put to rest. This Friday, Garcia and Haney will both compete in the main and co-main event of the Times Square Boxing event dubbed ‘Fatal Fury: City of Wolves.’ ‘King Ryan’ is set to take on Rolly Romero for the WBA Welterweight gold while Haney faces off with Jose Ramirez. And the presser for the event was laced with trash talk bangers!
“He was coming at my physique, but it’s all good. They were saying the same thing last time, and they got their a-s whooped last time, too! And you’ll get your a-s whooped again!” Garcia said. This is when Haney quipped, “He got off that Ostarine, and he don’t even sound the same! His voice changed back. Your physique changed! You’ve got ti—es now! Those muscles gone, your voice is gone.”
It is safe to say that Haney doesn’t like Garcia, for a very obvious reason: Garcia used a banned substance and came in overweight for their fight. He believes that the banned substance was the reason he lost his battle against Garcia, but how much of the truth is in this statement? And amidst all of this, Mike Tyson has stepped in to weigh in on the heated back-and-forth. The hosts of ‘The Ring’ asked Tyson about Devin Haney’s hatred for Ryan Garcia and whether Haney’s reaction was valid or an overreaction.
The boxing legend responded by saying that Haney has every right to be angry at Garcia. However, he further emphasized that he believes that ste—ds don’t make you a good fighter, “Absolutely, yeah. Yeah, just like me — you know, I’m a guy who doesn’t blame. Is he on ste—ds? I’m a guy who believes ste—ds don’t make you a better fighter. They make you strong, but they don’t make you a better fighter. So I don’t care what you use.”
As already mentioned, the two rivals will be sharing the same ring on the same night, not against each other, but against different opponents. At the press conference, both of them threw shade at each other as both Devin Haney and Bill Haney continued their attacks on Garcia, calling him out for the failed d–g test.
This forced former boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya to intervene, and Bill Haney and he nearly got physical after Haney made some comments about De La Hoya and his Golden Boy Promotions. Interestingly, this may culminate in a rematch for Haney and Garcia.
Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney might meet again in Times Square
When the two boxing heavyweights clashed last year, Garcia wasn’t sold on New York. The fighter believed that as proud Californians, their fight belonged under the West Coast banner. But his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, had a different vision. As per him, true greatness, Garcia’s greatness, can be built in the concrete jungle.
“I’m just excited to be back here in New York after such a historic event last time,” Garcia said. “It felt so sweet, so we’re going to have to do it again sooner or later, right?” What are King Ryan’s plans? Well, if Garcia defeats Rolly Romero in the main event and Devin Haney navigates through Jose Ramirez, then all the signs point to their blockbuster rematch.
Should their fight take place at the Times Square in New York, Garcia would undoubtedly be the fan favorite— especially after Haney was showered with boos by the hometown crowd during Wednesday’s fiery final press conference. “When I dust Jose Ramirez off on Friday, I’m going to get to your boy Ryan after,” Haney shouted back.
Their back-and-forth will likely culminate in a rematch, but for that to happen, both fighters will need to win their upcoming bouts. Given that, what are your thoughts on the buzz surrounding this? Share your opinion in the comments below.
