The NBA has evolved over the years, but it’s still not quite where Commissioner Adam Silver would like it to be. The solution? Maybe a reduction in the minutes per quarter. Yes, it’s a proposal that Silver has publicly stated– 10-minute quarters. Whether it will be a hit or a miss remains to be seen once it’s implemented, but for now, not many are in favor of it, except for one.
Earlier today, on 95.7 The Game, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr weighed in on the discussion about Silver’s new 10-minute quarters plan. While many of his colleagues in the league haven’t shown support, Kerr gave it a thumbs up. “I think it’s a good idea,” he said. “I’m not saying it’s, you know, for sure the right thing to do, but I like is,” his voice paused for a bit due to some technical issues, then he continued, “Adding a week to the season, you know, just in the one calendar week. Start camp a week earlier or whatever. Spread out the games more.”
Kerr seemed really impressed with Silver’s idea, as it could help with the league’s ongoing revenue issues, and the players would be spared from the load of playing more minutes. “We got to think of everything we can do because the one thing we know, the league is not going to cut games out of the schedule. I wish they would, but they’re not going to,” the 4-time champion coach said. “I don’t think any, or any of the constituents, are going to agree to that just because of the revenue loss. But if we’re not going to do that, then shortening the games, lengthening the calendar season so you get more rest for the players, I’m all for that.”
Kerr’s stance on the matter might not be taken well by the 29 other NBA coaches who haven’t been fond of the idea, but he still stands with Silver on this. Amid all this, a National reporter revealed that Silver arranged a secret meeting with the league’s general managers.
Brian Windhorst sheds light on Adam Silver’s new plan
It all started on the Dan Patrick Show, where Adam Silver floated the idea, citing TV presentations and international basketball as the reasons behind the potential change. On Get Up, when Brian Windhorst was asked about the change, the ESPN insider had two things to add. “Number one, he was being asked by Dan Patrick whether this was, for a hypothetical, like what change could you see? This is not something that they are currently considering,” Windy clarified, highlighting the topic wasn’t brought up in any of the meetings. “They just had a competition committee meeting and a general manager meeting this week, and Adam didn’t bring it up either.”

Then came the second point. “Now we know this is how he feels, but there might be a reason why he’s floating this, even if it’s something that’s years down the line, and that’s because the NBA is getting more into the interest in global basketball.” He gave the reference of how soccer teams do in competitions like UCL where teams of different continents participate to standardize the game. “They are considering creating a European league, and if sometime in the future the NBA would like to compete against European teams on a level playing field, like you see in soccer where teams across different continents play each other, you would need to have a standardized game.”
One thing is clear: the changes won’t be happening anytime soon, as Windy confirmed. However, it’s possible that this idea could be implemented down the line. What do you think about Adam Silver’’ new plan? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
