Miami Hurricanes had Cam Ward, a player who lit up the scenes everywhere he played. A season that ended with 4,313 yards at a passing completion rate of 67.2% with 39 touchdowns. This season was unparalleled for Ward and the Miami Hurricanes. But, despite the ace talisman, the Hurricanes didn’t even make the playoffs and lost their bowl game against ISU. This was a team that had struggles mainly in defense, and that led to the demise of all their hopes when they lost 2 games on the road in their regular season. However, this time, Mario Cristobal is coming with all guns blazing.
They have signed one of the top QBs in college football in Carson Beck. They have roped in a recruitment class, i.e., ranked 1st in the ACC. They have defensive talents on the roster to avoid the mistakes they made in the previous season. But, most of all, Mario Cristobal is doing everything in his might (by hook or crook) to make it happen. If you think offering Carson Beck a $4 million NIL deal raised eyebrows, Xavier Lucas’s acquisition is a full-blown hailstorm.
However, be that as it may, it seems the player is starting to find his rhythm in the Hurricanes’ camp and is looking like the player worth taking a risk for. Cam Underwood, a Miami insider, has revealed in a recent video the type of work Xavier Lucas is starting to put in training. “Xavier Lucas just smooth as can be, looking great wearing Miami Hurricanes orange, green and white. Rocking his classic number six jersey from high school and just fitting in exactly as we thought that he would. Big, fast, strong, light on his feet, fluid hips, and everything just out there looking like what we want Miami Hurricanes defensive backs to look like; and it’s great to see him there doing all of those things.”
Miami Hurricanes’ spring practice had started well earlier, starting from 3rd March, when they had their first one. So far, they have conducted 3 practices out of the 15 they are allowed to do by the NCAA. We will see them again hitting the field on 18th March, when we can see Xavier Lucas’s feature. Their last practice will be on 12th April, so the player still has time to develop and gel with his teammates and other freshman prospects who will be new to the team. Mark Fletcher, the Hurricanes’ running back, summarised the type of work the team is putting in.

“We definitely have a chip on my shoulder. We were so close, being right there. But the margin for error is very small. We have to prove that we can execute week in and week out. We’ve got no days off. We have to be locked in at all times.” This is something Miami sure would need to take care of. Since the margins of error are actually small, considering their playoff snub would have surely hurt. Then again, it was probably their best season in more than a decade, so the Canes still have what it takes. The major onus will be on the veterans like Carson Beck to carry forward the momentum and deliver a great season.
Wisconsin Badgers out to sabotage Xavier Lucas’ career?
We all know what Xavier Lucas’s transfer to Miami actually meant. I mean, this was a player who, instead of following the book, burnt it to the ground and went where his heart took him. The Wisconsin Badgers never wanted him to leave. They cited the revenue agreement clause signed between the player and the program and refused to transfer-list him on the portal. What did Lucas do? Well, he joined the Hurricanes anyway and then began probably the most difficult moment of his life yet.
Lawsuits were being thrown in the air, NCAA regulations were cited left, right, and center, and most of all, Big 10 jumped in with a threatening statement. “The Big Ten Conference stands in full support of the University of Wisconsin regarding the contractual agreement between student-athlete Xavier Lucas and the Wisconsin football program.” The threats were so intense that Lucas hired a lawyer to wade through the mess. He did it for now. But it seems this is just the calm before the storm.
The Wisconsin Badgers are pushing hard to get Miami Hurricanes and Mario Cristobal made culprits in the eyes of the NCAA. Tampering allegations and contract violations. They even claim they have “credible information indicating impermissible contact between Xavier and University of Miami football program personnel.” This is something that is concerning for both Xavier Lucas and Miami, too. It seems the Badgers aren’t backing down any time soon. And they will throw everything at them to prove Canes’s guilt.
