Technical Decision: What Happened After Eye Poke Controversy in Henry Cejudo vs Song Yadong at UFC Seattle

During the ceremonial weigh-ins, former champion Henry Cejudo opened a Chinese cookie professing a fourth-round TKO finish. However, little did he imagine that his prophecy would turn true. The fight reached the fourth round, however, it did not end the way he expected. After an accidental double-eye poke by Yadong, Henry Cejudo took a whole five minutes to rest before continuing the fight. But the discomfort continued, so, a call had to be made. Rather than stopping the fight right after the third round, the referee went for a technical decision instead.

So, what is a technical decision you ask? Well, the fight would have ended in a No Contest if it was stopped during the third round. And if the referee decided to deduct points, it would have been a majority draw. So, they decided to let the fourth round begin and then call off the fight to go to the judges’ scorecards. So, rather than a five-round fight, the fight did end in the middle of round 4 as ‘Triple C’ predicted. But unlike the prophecy, he ended up losing the fight with the judges scoring the fight 29-28, 29-28, 30-27 instead.

Henry Cejudo earlier made it clear that he doesn’t want to keep fighting if he doesn’t have a real chance of fighting for the title. Therefore, a defeat by Yadong- which, occurred, was the third in a row for the American. So, this practically ended his sporting aspirations, opening up a good opportunity to hang up the gloves of combat sports. So, can we expect a retirement post anytime soon?
