Two-weight undisputed champion Terence Crawford has once again shared his perspective on the highly controversial fight between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. on March 1st. Davis and Roach Jr. went head to head in New York, which produced a majority decision draw, with many claiming that ‘The Reaper’ had done enough to win. But that’s not all!
The knee incident during the 9th round, where Davis took a knee to get his face wiped by his corner, wasn’t ruled a knockdown, leading to more controversy. The argument was whether the knee should have been ruled a knockdown—if it had, Roach Jr. would have won the fight. Regardless, Crawford was one of the few people who claimed Roach Jr. won the fight back in March.
Now, over a month later, he appeared in the Ring Champs with Ak & Barak podcast, where he shared a tough truth with the Baltimore native, stating, “I still had Roach winning probably [by] like one or two rounds.” The Nebraska-born technician further added that the fight itself was close, but suggested that ‘Tank’ Davis was way too confident, which resulted in the fight unfolding as it did.

“I think ‘Tank’ just underestimated him. And he was just looking for him to be himself and get a knockout,” Crawford added. Crawford explained that Davis mostly remains behind on the scorecards until he scores a knockout. “I always said ‘Tank’ is losing until he’s not losing… When you watch him fight against Leo Santa Cruz, against Rolly… even Ryan was doing [well] the first couple of rounds…”
When asked whether the WBA lightweight champion relies too much on his power, Crawford claimed, “I do…” This performance is likely to haunt Davis and change his approach to the fight in their highly anticipated rematch later this year. However, the question is—does Crawford think Roach Jr. will get the job done this time around?
Terence Crawford predicts Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr. 2
Initially, Davis and Roach Jr.’s rematch was supposed to be on June 21st, as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. However, the date was later postponed to August 16th in Las Vegas, Nevada. Though the venue is not yet finalized, the contenders are T-Mobile Arena and MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Regardless, ahead of the rematch, Crawford, during the same podcast, revealed his predictions for the fight. Despite supporting Roach Jr.’s win in the first fight, Crawford feels ‘The Reaper’ won’t be able to secure victory in the second one. “I think you gonna get a better ‘Tank,’ but at the same time, I think Roach done fought at his peak,” Crawford said. “I don’t think he can fight no better than that.”
That said, Terence Crawford still thinks Lamont Roach Jr. won the first fight. However, he feels the rematch might belong to Gervonta Davis. Only time will tell whether Crawford’s prediction comes to fruition. Who do you think will win the rematch?
