“This Is Not About Attitude”: Anthony Rendon’s Tragic Situation Finds a Supporter In His Super Agent Amid Increasing Fan Fury

Will the Angels’ fans ever be able to see Anthony Rendon playing for an entire season? Chances are low! Rendon is reportedly going to have his left hip surgery and moved to the 60-day injured list. So yes, after missing most of the seasons in the last five years, 2025 is also no different for him. Rendon is now at the receiving end of the fans and insiders, accusing him of a lack of commitment and proper attitude.

Well, not everyone is on the same page, and there are opposite arguments as well, stating Rendon’s situation is unfortunate rather than intentional. The super agent Scott Boras is one such who is voicing for Rendon, stating how difficult it is for the players to get with long-term injuries. Despite Anthony Rendon not being committed to the game or it is a misfortune, he will always be remembered as a tragic hero. So what lies ahead of him? What are the options open ahead for Anthony Rendon to pursue?

Anthony Rendon: A tragic hero

There was a time when Anthony Rendon was considered the next big thing in MLB. Till 2019, Anthony Rendon was a big name in MLB when his 6.7 WAR was second only to the legend Mike Trout’s 8.4. That figure was enough for the Angels to offer big. As big as $245 million for seven years! Who would have expected that Rendon and injury would go hand-in-hand from now on? Since 2021, he has yet to play a full season for the Angels, with multiple injuries happening every season. For the unversed, in five years with the Angels, Rendon played 257 games. That’s 25% of the total games he was expected to play. That’s a costly blunder for the Angels, while Rendon is facing the wrath for his lack of dedication.

“It’s the worst thing in a player’s life”

Is it true then that Anthony Rendon is not willing to play intentionally? Boras thinks otherwise. “Remember that this is not about attitude; it’s not about commitment. It’s not intent; it’s about the lack of physical manifestation due to injury,” said Boras in a podcast with Foul Territory. Rendon is currently suffering from a career-ending hip injury, which is very probable for repeated occurrence. While Rendon had surgery on one hip last year, he probably needs to operate the other one. Thus, as per Boras, it is an utter misfortune for Anthony Rendon that he faced this injury that is stopping him from getting back to action.

Hoping for a graceful exit?

It is still not clear when Rendon can make a comeback or if he can even make it! Now that his injuries are continuing from the time he joined the Angels, it is time for the team to move away from him. He still owes $38 million from his remaining two years with the Angels. Fans would be interested to see how the team can finalize an exit plan for Rendon. “Talking to people who know Anthony Rendon, the thought is he might just retire,” said an MLB insider, Alden Gonzalez. It is a frustrating situation for Rendon to get questioned year-long about his comeback, and considering he is 34 now, the future is grim for him on the field.

Boras already indicated that teams could retire their players, and in that case, he will help restructure the contract for a purposeful exit. Maybe an extended deferred payment can work out for the Angels here. While it is unfortunate for Anthony Rendon to not be able to utilize his potential, it is proving too costly for the Angels to retain someone who has yet to hit a single home run since July 2023. Rather than ridiculing him anymore, fans can just hope that Rendon has a successful surgery and wish him luck for his post-surgery journey.

A tragic hero in all ways, Anthony Rendon is the prime example of how injuries can prove fatal for sports talents.
