To Salvage TGL, Tiger Woods Asked to Extend ‘Olive Branch’ to Bryson DeChambeau & Co. Amid Rating Drop

TGL. Yes, we’re back at it again. TGL has, undoubtedly, faced its fair share of criticisms, particularly with its Full Swing simulator. The issues are quite glaring – exaggerated movements, inaccurate data, and players left scratching their heads, wondering what’s going on. For instance, the simulator has been known to make shots look like they’re going out of bounds when, in reality, players felt they nailed them. Short-range shots have been especially problematic, with some players insisting they didn’t even hit a bad shot, only to have the simulator display it as a hook or mishit.

And let’s not forget the spin issue – the simulator just can’t seem to capture it accurately, leading to some pretty flawed data. But some golf enthusiasts believe it’s not the tech part that is acting as a roadblock in Tiger Woods’s league’s success. In the latest episode of The Varsity, titled “LIV and Let Die” on Apple Podcast, the panel shares their honest take on TGL, the new golf league that’s been making waves. One speaker sums it up perfectly as he said,  “Do they have the sports league that they think they have? And I don’t think that bridge has been built yet.”

Despite this, they acknowledge that TGL has some entertaining aspects, with the on-screen product being “mildly entertaining, some weeks it’s very entertaining.” In fact, the speaker had firsthand experience with TGL’s entertainment value, attending a match in Palm Beach Gardens and enjoying the in-person social experience.

So, what’s the key to TGL’s success? The speaker thinks it’s all about expansion, specifically adding LIV players to the mix. “They’re going to have to expand, adding things like, say, LIV players… If this turns out to be the vehicle that might form some kind of solution or olive branch as the game kind of reunites itself, TGL is a potential vehicle for that usage.” With potential plans to add an LPGA team, TGL might just have the potential to build something special. As the speaker notes, “Maybe you add an LPGA team in there as well… and I think it has the potential to build.”

Well, LIV superstar Bryson DeChambeau has expressed his desire to play in the TGL, and his comments have raised some eyebrows. In a recent presser at the International Series in India, DeChambeau revealed that he thinks the TGL has an “interesting opportunity” and that he’s all about growing the game, saying, “I’m all about anything to grow the game, so if it’s helping grow the game, then fantastic.”

However, he’s also aware that his involvement might not be welcomed due to his ties with LIV Golf, adding with a laugh, “I don’t know if they’d take me though, I’ve no idea. I got a whole team over here at Crushers, come on. Crushers can be part of that.” It’s clear that DeChambeau is open to exploring new opportunities in golf, but he’s also mindful of the delicate relationships between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour.

Well, while we wait for the big guns to take a step on the given advice, TGL might just have found what it needed to build something special.

TGL Golf takes centre stage

The inaugural TGL season is shaping up to be a massive success story. With its unique blend of team golf, cutting-edge technology, and prime-time entertainment, TGL has managed to captivate audiences and attract a new, younger demographic. The league’s innovative format, which features six teams of four players each, has brought out the personalities of the players, delivering high-octane entertainment.

As Justin Thomas, whose Atlanta Drive team has secured a spot in the playoffs, puts it, “It’s just a different form of golf.” Rory McIlroy adds, “I think people have enjoyed watching it on TV. There’s nowhere I can go that people aren’t talking to me about it.”

With impressive TV ratings, averaging 765,000 viewers across six prime-time matches on ESPN, and a strong online presence, TGL is proving to be a game-changer for golf. The league’s semifinal playoff series kicks off on March 17 and 18, followed by the best-of-three finals series for the SoFi Cup on March 24 and 25. As the season heats up, one thing is clear: TGL is here to stay, and it’s bringing a fresh wave of excitement to the world of golf.
