Former UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was about to compete in his first non-UFC fight since 2011 this May. He was supposed to take on the former Bellator fighter and Conor McGregor‘s friend, Dillon Danis, under the Global Fight League (GFL) banner. However, that fight never happened as the promotion canceled the event due to issues related to money and funding. But guess what? The duo never closed the door on a potential matchup.
“Great practice. F—— bet it’s on. Dillon gon’ get it,” Tony Ferguson wrote on social media after a training session following their fight’s cancellation. These comments fueled the speculations regarding a potential showdown against Dillon Danis. Over a month after those comments from ‘El Cucuy’, he has now shared another hint that something is about to go down in the coming weeks.
In a recent post on X, Tony Ferguson shared a prediction of how a fight between him and Dillon Danis would pan out. As one would expect, the former UFC interim champion sees himself taking the victory and also promises to bring the fight to the BJJ specialist, as he plans on dominating him. Quoting one of pop star Miley Cyrus’s quotes, Ferguson wrote, “Ahhhh Yes, The Journey Is The Part You Remember Anyways.”

While Tony Ferguson has claimed that there will be some fight news soon, fans might start thinking that it surely won’t be in the GFL. However, that’s not an accurate assumption. Yes, the whole event fell apart, but there is some work being done to make it happen. Let’s take a look at that front.
Could Tony Ferguson fight Dillon Danis in June?
So far, there’s no update available on the possible Tony Ferguson vs Dillion Danis fight, but one of the owners has given a hint that GFL could be the place they fight. The promotion owners were quite ambitious as they promised to give fighters some perks that the UFC doesn’t, but their plans failed flat on their face. Founder Darren Owen opened up on the situation and mentioned that he had one of his investors pulling the plug on their agreement.
However, there are still some things getting worked out to materialize the inaugural GFL event. Just like Dana White and Co. did when they shifted UFC Saudi Arabia last year from its initial date to another date, albeit due to a different reason, the GFL owners are also trying to make sure they make their event materialize on a new date, most probably in June, which Darren Owen is confident about.
“Working on a solution. My main investor didn’t fulfill his April obligation, which has caused a problem. I’ll keep you posted, but I believe we will be able to work through it. I think we can make it happen for June,” the GFL founder told Ariel Helwani. “I think we’re going to have to push the dates to June 15/16. I’ll confirm asap. It’s been a frustrating week, but I think there’s a solution in place.”
