“Hi everybody! I’m gonna make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast. I’ve loved every single minute of it.” It took less than 20 seconds for Tyson Fury to wrap up informing boxing buffs about his retirement on January 13. By the timing of it, why he did it was pretty obvious. “The Gypsy King” lost to Oleksandr Usyk, not once but twice. He had the green and gold belt. He wanted Usyk’s WBA, WBO, and IBF titles to become undisputed. For those who need a recap or missed watching the two heavyweights’ first bout altogether, it was an interesting clash. In the beginning, both the 36-year-old and his Ukrainian opponent were head-on equals.
Fury had nicely compensated for Usyk’s on-point first-round left hook with several uppercuts during the subsequent rounds. Though things really started to take a turn when the undefeated 23-0 landed a right in the eighth round, then another. After that, it was just the southpaw’s beast mode on show. Even after regrouping in the last two rounds, there wasn’t much that the British boxer could do to stop his opponent’s split decision win. Going into it for a second time didn’t prove beneficial for Fury either, bringing him a unanimous decision loss this time. But is that it? Is Tyson Fury okay with riding into the sunset rather than lacing his gloves up for one last time? Possibly for his belt floating around as the IBF champ, Daniel Dubois. Or the biggest all-British fight against Anthony Joshua that never made it to the ring? Or even a revenge trilogy with Usyk to prove who is the best? It seems like none of this can convince Fury to make a return.
Like always, Fury shared a string of photos on his Instagram, looping fans in on what life feels like when you have made a legacy, have loads of money in your bank account, and choose to retire at the sweet spot of an age he is currently at. Posting eleven photos six hours ago, he dumped pictures from his time in Monaco. Apparently, the Manchester native was there to attend the annual F1 racing event—the Monaco Grand Prix.
Fury captioned the post, “Could get used to this…,” confirming the confidence of boxing insiders like Bob Arum on the fact that Fury’s retirement is final. Especially because he is financially strong, and has already proven himself as a great boxer at the limitless weight class. Most of the captures were cute couple moments the boxer had with his wife, Paris Fury. Just the normal stuff like enjoying a plane ride with her, chatting over lunch with a great view, or posing for a picture without wearing boxing attire. Just things he would’ve otherwise not gotten the time for.
He was partying with the most unexpected meet-ups fans could’ve imagined. Fury reposted clips of partying with the rapper 50 Cent and a frenemy, the Zimbabwe native, Derek Chisora, in his Instagram stories. At a club in a European country, he filmed Cent entering the venue as a singer, while the 41-year-old danced behind him. Both of them were looking into the selfie camera, in what looked like a chill hangout together. And to be honest? Fury seemed to be enjoying it. Though die-hard fans are still not buying the boxer’s retirement from the sport. Even after he has stuck to it twice.
Tyson Fury doubled down on his retirement announcement
Before this post, too, Fury had made another update on quitting boxing. Yesterday, he posted a reel with a beautiful lake view from his balcony, when he addressed the rumors going around about his return to the ring. “I hear a lot of talk about the Gypsy King returning to boxing. And I ask the question for this one—for what? What would I return for? More boxing bouts?” Fury asked his fans. He said that though he’s been “wronged” in the Usyk fight, it was fair play on his part, and that’s it.
So it really is true that Fury is set on his retirement and giving time to his family now. After all, that’s what he’s been doing, right? But the thing is, these rumors did not surface out of nowhere. Fury did post videos of him hitting the punching bag. “is there anything better than working ?” is what he captioned one of the posts. Obviously, fans thought that his boredom might pull him back to the biz of boxing.
Still, for now, since he himself has made it clear thrice that he’s not going to come back to fight Anthony Joshua even if the latter has called him out for a bout, it looks like Tyson Fury really is done with the sport. Do you wish him to make a return? Or do you think that the time he’s served on the canvas is a good 16 years?
