“I’m back.” These three words from Midge Purce were enough to send her ardent fans over the moon. After her contract with Gotham FC expired, the USWNT star was ultimately retained by the NWSL side earlier this year. Beyond quashing speculation of a rift with her club, the move also hinted at a potential return from her ACL tear. However, there had been no sign of Purce on the field—until now—as the forward has finally shared an update suggesting she could be back in action “quite soon.”
Yes, the moment you all had patiently been awaiting is ultimately here. At last, after a year-long wait over her recovery from the injury, we have some news surrounding her much-anticipated return on the pitch—well, sort of. That’s because Purce has still not clearly mentioned when can fans expect her back on the pitch.
It all came on the latest podcast episode of Casuals with Katie Nolan, an XM Sirius original, where at the beginning of the segment, the host asked Midge to give a tentative date of when she would play. Interestingly, feeling a bit hesitant, she replied, “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say [that].” Curiously enough, Nolan kept insisting on why the 29-year-old wasn’t allowed to disclose the information.
To which, Purce confusingly responds, “I don’t know, because my team [has asked me not to]. Back in the sports world, you’re not supposed to tell everybody everything that’s happening soon,” she said, before adding, “[But] quite soon…so I’m really excited.” Typically, Nolan was still not done with her interrogation regarding the Gotham FC forward’s return date. She kept on asking what she actually meant by “soon.”
The podcast host jokingly asked Purce whether the day that marks her return actually starts with an ‘S’. That left the former Portland Thorns star in splits, before Nolan again questioned if it was “This upcoming ‘S’”. At this point, the Gotham star was left in a dilemma as she frustratingly replied, “I don’t know if I could say. I think it’s a day-by-day thing too.” But again, she dropped a cryptic response saying, “There’s an ‘S’ and I’ll be in one of the ‘S’ soon.”
Hmm, interesting. This means we could see Purce make her return to the pitch either on Saturday or Sunday. However, the exact date for either of these days remains unclear. For now, fans don’t have to keep stressing; that’s because, in the coming two weeks, there is no NWSL action lined up due to the international break.
With three matchdays having been fulfilled, one can expect her to be back after Matchday 4, which will return on April 11. In the meantime, she can focus more on her recuperation, something which Purce apparently enjoyed a lot!
Midge Purce found her injury as a ‘cool refresher’
Continuing with the segment, the Silver Spring, Maryland native shared her experience of her journey while recuperating from her injury. While typically other players feel quite frustrated over missing out on the action, Purce was rather enjoying the fact that she had time to relax.
“I’ve played this game since I was a child and there has not been one year where I wasn’t playing this game,” she said. “This year, it was like, ‘Okay, you’re not playing soccer… a true sabbatical.’ I was like, ‘This is kind of interesting. It was a cool refresher… still really painful at times, mostly emotionally and physically,” said the Gotham star
On an unfortunate note, Purce ended up missing the 2024 Paris Olympics, something which even the attacker must be bummed about. Either way, she would be looking to make the most of her time as soon as she hits the ground running!
