SEG kicked off a multi-phase overhaul to make the 1991-built arena a state-of-the-art venue. The star of the show? The Delta Centre, where cheering for the Utah Hockey Club or the Utah Jazz, and every seat feels like it’s courtside or rinkside. That’s the vision the Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) is bringing to life with a massive renovation project to transform the Delta Center into a dual-sport masterpiece for both NHL and basketball fans. Plus, they may have given the public a hint as to what their NHL team’s official name will be.
A first-of-its-kind retractable seating system that tackles the tricky 12-foot elevation difference between the hockey rink and basketball court end-lines. For hockey, this means every lower bowl seat will have a clear view of the ice by the 2025-26 season, fixing 1,000 obstructed seats and adding 400 new ones. For basketball, the system includes 29 rows of retractable seats stretching 28 feet from the Level 3 concourse to the baseline, keeping Jazz fans practically on top of the action with the arena’s signature steep slope. President of Hockey Operations, Chris Armstrong, provided some key updates regarding the team name and plans to renovate the arena. He could not provide much information on when the name is going to be announced, but did mention it should be in the near future.
Utah Hockey Club reporter Belle Fraser shared her excitement on X. She wrote, “Visual of the new Delta Center riser system. Every seat in the lower bowl will have a complete view of the ice at start of the 2025-26 season. When all renovations are done, NHL seating capacity increases from 11,131 to 17,000. NBA increases from 18,206 to 19,000.” That’s a serious capacity boost—17,000 for hockey and 19,000 for basketball—thanks to added seating behind the goals and around event tunnels.
