Leaving behind the classic battle between bat and ball, MLB has its fair share of conspiracy theories — some wild, some oddly believable. A few stem from controversy, some from pure fan frustration, and others just make you sit back and wonder why. While most of these rumors add a layer of fun to the baseball ecosystem, some go far enough to crank up fan rivalries to another level. The latest? A drama-filled tale starring Juan Soto. It’s got everything: cross-town rivalry, front-office chess, and just enough fan delusion to spice things up.
It all started after Soto got a little too honest about how he was more protected in the Yankees compared to the Mets.
“I had the best hitter in baseball hitting behind me. I was getting more attacked and more pitches in the strike zone, fewer intentional walks, and things like that. Was pitched differently last year.”
Well, Soto has been pretty clear — hitting in front of Aaron Judge is like having a security system backing you up with 62-homer power (2022). Soto hasn’t been shy about praising Judge’s presence behind him, which forces pitchers to pitch to him, something he has yet to receive in the Mets this year. Yes, even with a slugger like Pete Alonso behind him!

Naturally, Mets fans didn’t take it well. Some saw it as a dig. But then, the story took a sharp turn into conspiracy territory. Cue Evan Roberts of WFAN Sports Radio. A station that thrives on stirring the pot. Roberts claimed that Yankees fans were plotting a low-key infiltration of Citi Field, disguised as Mets fans, just to boo Juan Soto. Controversy or conspiracy? Let that sink in.
“Evan Roberts puts his tinfoil hat on, and claims Yankees fans will allegedly invade Citifield tonight posing as Mets fans to boo Juan Soto,” WFAN Sports Radio shared from their podcast.
Yankees fans were quick to shut it down, accusing Roberts of creating a baseless controversy. Some reminded everyone that sure, they weren’t thrilled about Soto choosing the Mets, but organizing a “covert operation” to boo him? Yeah, not exactly high on their to-do list.
The Yankees fans are all armed up
Since the podcast went live, the broadcasters were on the receiving end of how unverified claims are promoted, stoking controversies.
WFAN isn’t just any radio station when it comes to baseball — it’s a front-row seat to the New York baseball soap opera. For decades, it’s been the go-to station for Yankees and Mets coverage, debates, reactions, and rage calls.
This segment is an actual embarrassment to sports radio
— Bronx Bombers Beat (@bomberbeat2) April 17, 2025
The best segment to take the stats with emotions and humor. However, anything and everything in the name of humor? One fan doesn’t think so and called this segment an embarrassment to the entire sports radio ecosystem.
One highlighted how a slow start is common with Juan Soto and how the fans are not bothered by it. For reference, Soto has 6 RBIs after the first 16 games this year, while he had 3 homers and 15 RBIs after the same period last year.
So yes, Soto is traditionally a slow starter, but he is slower this year in contrast to last year. However, the regular season just got started, and it is too bold to think that the Mets fans are upset with Soto and that the Yankees will act covertly!
“No EvanRobertsWFAN, we don’t care, I can promise you that, buddy. Your fanbase is booing Juan Soto, which is pathetic,” this user went no-holds-barred about how the Yankees fans don’t care about what Soto is doing with the Mets. Moreover, it is the Mets fans who are booing the slugger. Well, Soto went 0-for-3 with a walk against the Cardinals on Thursday, dropping his average to .221. Those numbers aren’t panic mode just yet, but in New York, patience wears thin fast, especially when you’re a superstar expected to carry the lineup in October. So yes, some boos were heard at Citi Field!
“Other than Boomer and Gio, this station is unlistenable.” Well, this guy is far from alone on that take. Plenty of fans feel like Boomer & Gio are carrying the WFAN torch. The rest of the lineup has gotten, let’s just say, less compelling. Moreover, for a baseball fan, it’s even more frustrating. Why? Baseball talk has gotten buried behind NFL/NBA noise unless it’s a major scandal or a Yankees crisis. Boomer & Gio still give solid Mets/Yanks coverage, but the rest can feel like filler until football season. See this one, an unverified claim to stoke up controversies!
“We got better things to do, man.” Fine, so the Yankees fans got to think about the one-game suspension of Jazz Chisholm, when Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole will return, and more so.
Nevertheless, that’s how baseball goes the way New Yorkers do it. Whether you believe the booing conspiracy or not, there’s no denying one thing: When it comes to chaos, New York baseball never disappoints.
