‘What Else You Got on Me?’: Viktor Hovland Drops an ‘8 Mile’-Style Bombshell to Shut Down Doubts at the Masters

Is It Possible for a Rap Battle to Encourage Golf Course Success? In a surprising combination of music and sports, PGA Tour player Viktor Hovland has used Eminem’s famous rap battles in “8 Mile” as motivation to improve his on-course performance. But what connection does a movie about freestyle rap competitions have to the tranquil professional golf course?

Viktor Hovland’s candid approach: Learning from Eminem’s ‘8 Mile’

In a fascinating interview, Hovland was asked if he was transparent about his swing adjustments and coaching choices throughout the previous 12 months. In response to a question about why he avoids using clichéd, ambiguous answers, Hovland outlined his mindset by citing Eminem’s tactic in “8 Mile.”

During a rap fight in the movie’s climax, Eminem’s character anticipates and corrects his own shortcomings, leaving his opponent without any ammunition. Hovland observes a similarity in the way he talks about his game: “I don’t mind being honest. I think if you hold it in, it almost becomes—the fear almost becomes bigger instead of when you speak the truth out there, you kind of desensitize it in a way. Maybe it’s not the best analogy, but if you’ve seen ‘8 Mile’ with Eminem there, it’s like before his final rap battle, he kind of disses himself. It’s like: Here I am, what else you got on me?” This openness is a reflection of Hovland’s conviction that by publicly recognizing his difficulties, their influence is lessened and he is free to focus on his progress without having to worry about hidden anxieties.

This is a developing story…
