What Happened to Willie Green? Pelicans HC Misses Hornets Clash As Concerning Details Emerge

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green misses Sunday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets due to personal reasons. His absence came at a bad time for the Pelicans, just days after he brutally criticized his own team following a 46-point blowout loss to the Detroit Pistons.

After that brutal defeat, Green didn’t hold back, calling his team “soft” and expressing frustration over their performance. “We looked like a team that forgot how to play basketball,” Green said, visibly disappointed. He also pointed out the Pelicans’ lack of rhythm and accused the squad of feeling “sorry for themselves.” Although there’s no official connection between Green’s criticism and his absence, his sudden departure has only added to the uncertainty surrounding the team as they fight to stay competitive in the playoff race.

In Green’s absence, James Borrego stepped in and returned to familiar territory, but the Hornets looked very different from when he coached them from 2018 to 2022. Only Miles Bridges and the injured LaMelo Ball remain from his time there. Borrego’s leadership brought some stability to the Pelicans as they tried to regroup during a challenging time.
