What Injury Did Mateusz Gamrot Suffer From? ‘Busted Face’ Reality Explained

Mateusz Gamrot is no stranger to tough fights and rigorous training camps, but his latest appearance has fans scratching their heads—and raising their eyebrows. Just days before he’s set to throw down with Ľudovít Klein at UFC Fight Night: Blanchfield vs. Barber on May 31, 2025, Gamrot showed up looking like he’d already been in a five-round war. The Polish lightweight contender, who is now ranked seventh in the class, is coming off a split decision loss to Dan Hooker.

With a point to prove and a ranking to protect, he has his sights set on Klein. However, it’s what happened before this fight that has gotten everyone talking. A clip of ‘Gamer’ on Ariel Helwani‘s show went viral, as he came sporting a face that looked like it had gone through a meat grinder. As expected, it prompted fans to fill the comments section. So, what injury did he suffer, and is he going to be fine? Let’s find out.

Sparring is an important component of any fighter’s training, but there’s a fine line between sharpening your tools and dulling them just before the big test. Mateusz Gamrot’s most recent appearance showed that he may have gone too far. When Ariel Helwani asked him what had happened, ‘Gamer’ casually dismissed it, stating, “Bro, just a normal day in ATT. Light sparring with Dustin.”

That’s Dustin Poirier, by the way—the same Poirier that is prepping for a BMF clash with Max Holloway. Let’s be honest: if this is what “light sparring” looks like, we’d hate to see what full contact means in that gym. ‘The Diamond’ is known for his sharp hands and crisp boxing, and Gamrot’s face appeared to absorb every bit of it. Fans who watched the interview were very candid.

Comments like “Did he just get out of a fight?” and “Why does Gamrot look like he’s been in a 10-round war?” started to appear everywhere. Even though his face was clearly bloated and scraped up, Mateusz Gamrot didn’t seem too bothered. He downplayed them, telling Helwani, “Just a scratch. A little bit swollen, but I feel great. I feel amazing.”

That could be the fighter in him speaking, but you can’t dismiss his concern, especially with such a major match ahead. With the co-main event spot at UFC Vegas 107 on the line, many wonder if Mateusz Gamrot’s warrior attitude will come at the expense of his performance.

When injury helped Gamrot get an important UFC win

Ironically, injuries haven’t always worked against Gamrot; in fact, one helped him win a key fight. At UFC Vegas 79, he met Rafael Fiziev in what many thought to be a brutal contest. And for a round, that was exactly what happened. Fiziev looked impressive, winning the first round on all three judges’ scorecards. But only two minutes into the second, everything changed.

Fiziev delivered a right roundhouse kick, landed awkwardly, and collapsed to the canvas clutching his leg. While Mateusz Gamrot charged in and delivered a few follow-up strikes, it was clear that Fiziev could no longer fight, and the bout was called. It was later revealed that he had ruptured his ACL, bringing an abrupt and tragic end to what was shaping up to be a classic.

Nobody wants to win this way, but it’s a win nonetheless. ‘Gamer’ was polite in his post-fight remarks, wishing Rafael Fiziev a swift recovery, but you could see he felt the anticlimax. “This is not the finish I would like,” he said. Still, that night put another notch in his UFC win column and gave him momentum to ride into bigger fights, like the one against Dan Hooker and now, Ľudovít Klein. What do you think? Will he get a win against Klein? Let us know in the comments.
