A look at Murjanatu Musa’s college and professional career
Unlike the usual path that players take to the WNBA, Murjanatu Musa did not attend college. She started her basketball journey playing for the Nigerian team, the Air Warriors. In 2019, she led her team to a historic win in the Zenith Women’s Basketball League finals with an MVP performance and had a 17-point and 15-rebound double-double.
In 2021, she made the jump to the Spanish league by joining the Celta Zorka Vigo. She spent three seasons playing with the team, with the 2022-23 season being a particular highlight. Throughout the course of the season, she averaged an impressive 13.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game.
Following this, she joined the French team Tabres Gespe Bigorre before being signed by the Phoenix Mercury for the 2025 WNBA season. Even though she missed the whole training camp, Musa made the final roster for the Mercury. For the Mercury, she appeared in 12 games and averaged 3.3 ppg from a play-time of about 10.2 per game.
Musa also represented her country, Nigeria, in the 2020 and 2024 Olympics, as well as leading the Nigerians to two gold medals in the 2021 and 2023 AfroBasket tournaments.
Although Mercury waived her off without giving her a proper run in the side, Musa has showcased her talent during her time in Europe as well as in the few minutes she got in the W. She definitely deserves another crack in the league, with a side willing to give her the minutes to showcase her abilities in full flow. It remains to be seen which side will gamble on the Nigerian star, but whoever it is, they will be getting an extraordinary player.
