Julia Lopez Ramirez’s love for dirt bikes was an indicator of two things: she wanted to keep her father’s love for bikes alive while taking care of her own dreams in the sports world. Having started riding dirt bikes at 3, Ramirez said, “It’s something I really enjoy, and it’s exciting. Just no thoughts on it. You have to be present in that, like, don’t fall.” Now, thanks to her forearm muscles (driving dirt bikes requires strength) and her gym work, she is averaging a distance of 290.8 yards per hit at Erin Hills. But beyond her gym work and dirt bike routine, her trusted looper, Lauren Whyte, also comes in handy. So, who is Whyte, Ramirez’s caddie, who says, “I just admire it [Ramirez’s performance] from afar?”
Whyte has known Lopez Ramirez for some time, as she served as an assistant at Mississippi State during Lopez Ramirez’s tenure there. She agreed to be her caddie when Lopez Ramirez turned professional. However, Lauren Whyte didn’t land a career in sports right away, she started it a little differently.
Lauren Whyte earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Denver in 2018 and completed her Master’s in Higher Education Leadership in 2019 at Mercer University. She is in Starkville with her husband, Kolton Lapa, who began his role as the assistant coach for the men’s program on June 13, 2022.
