Will Semi-Retired Lexi Thompson Play in the 2025 US Women’s Open? LPGA Star’s Schedule Explored

A worry that surrounds every golf fan is not seeing their favorite golfer at the biggest events of the Tour. Lexi Thompson, who announced her retirement in 2024, missed the cut and the chances to win the tournament.

In 2007, she became the youngest to ever qualify for the US Women’s Open at the age of 12 (until 2014). But despite the early exposure, the victory column still stands at zero. The best finish, unfortunately, for the golfer was T2 in 2019, where she lost to Jeongeun Lee by 2 strokes.

The barest of margin losses has left a void for the golfer and for the fans. Her retirement news made it even worse for the fans as they might not see the golfer again at the second major of the LPGA Tour. But with her part-time participation, can fans expect her to participate?

Well, the 11x LPGA Tour winner recently shared her rigorous workout routine on social media, hinting at her appearance soon. She posted, “Love my sessions with @kolbywayne !! #lexifitness,” where in the videos Thompson performs barbell squats, arm pulls, and weighted arm rows. Now, with four participations already this season, including the Chevron Championship despite having a crucial family event, the fans expect her training to be for the upcoming US Women’s Open.

Indeed, it was. As per the USGA official website, Thompson will be teeing off on May 29th for another attempt to clinch the Harton S. Semple Trophy. Even though the 30-year-old in 2025 has had ups and downs with her performance. She recorded two top-15 finishes, while the other two had T38 and MC. But ignoring that, this might be the last attempt to clinch the trophy for Thompson.

Despite the struggle, she has been close to the victory and knows what it takes to stay up close on the leaderboard. With 18 appearance, she recorded the best in 2017. Let’s look back at her historic performance.

Lexi Thompson’s performance in the 2019 US Women’s Open

Out of the 18 appearances, Thompson failed to make the cut 6 times. Even in the past two editions, she consecutively missed twice. However, despite that, her performance in 2019 and 2021 is what sets the confidence at its peak for her victory. In 2021, she was placed third, while in 2019, T2.

For the golfer, her performance in 2019 was the best, as she showcased an impressive feat of comeback despite struggling in the first round. After carding one bogey and two birdies, she ended her first round with a score of 70. However, for clinching the title, it wasn’t even close. That’s when her redemption performance started, which left the golf community amazed.

On Friday, she opened the round with a bogey, leaving supporters concerned, but that was the only bogey in the second round. Thompson added three birdies after that. With the comeback performance, she ended the round with -2 to get in the top 5 and a lot of optimism. Later in the weekend, she recorded 6 under 68 to jump to T3.

With two spots for the win, the golfer on the final day started the performance on high, but with 5 bogeys and three birdies, she could only jump to T2. Lexi Thompson, with her final score of 4 under 280, recorded the career-best performance at the US Women’s Open. However, still felt short of victory. But can she take a lesson from the past and win the 2025 edition? What are your thoughts on it? Let us know in the comments below.
