The former two-time featherweight champ, Jose Aldo, has retired once before from UFC to pursue boxing in 2022. But then he returned to show off his prowess in UFC once more and won against Jonathan Martinez, but lost the next two fights. Now the ultimatum has arrived, and he announced his retirement for a second time recently. Aldo suffered a decision defeat to Georges St-Pierre’s teammate, Aiemann Zahabi, at UFC 315, and that seemed like his last straw.
After the fight, ‘Scarface’ did something that was enough to tell the MMA fans about his retirement. He quietly laid his gloves on the mat, signifying that he is likely done with his MMA career. The 38-year-old then confirmed his retirement at a press conference at Nova Uniao’s training center. “No, I don’t see myself fighting,” Aldo said. “When I went back [to the UFC in 2024], it wasn’t for money, it was for a purpose, I had a calling. I tried doing it and it didn’t work. I gave my all and was happy with everything I’ve achieved.”
Jose also decided to reiterate the same thing about his retirement as per MMA Fighting. He said, “Offer me any fight, wherever it is, I don’t want to. I don’t see myself fighting anymore, or training, or doing anything like that. Of course, I do see myself training here to help my friends. I know how hard that is, so if I can help in any way with the experience I have, I will help with all my heart. But to specifically put a gi or anything like that to fight, never again.”
He has decided to finally step back from MMA permanently and only help his teammates get ready for their fights. The MMA world had a lot to say about this, so let’s get down to the comments.
Fans express heartfelt emotions for Jose Aldo’s retirement
Fans expressed their gratitude and good wishes for the 32-10-0 star while also accusing the judges of robbing him of winning his last two fights. The fans commented things like, “Good respectfully he should’ve never came back still my 145,” and “sucks a top 10 fighter of all time got robbed twice in a row for his last fights.”Another follower wrote, “I don’t blame him. He’s always getting robbed.” One follower praised his decision and commented, “What a fuc–g legend!”
One follower wrote, “Bad judges ruined his passion for the sport, it’s sad. He loved martial arts, and the judges took that love away from him.” UFC 315 was indeed a little controversial when it came to his loss against Zahabi. Zahabi received a trio of 29-28 scores after the 3 round battle. Aldo did make it to the scorecards, but his hand was not raised as he lost on points for the third time in his past four fights. From fans to fighters like Renato Moicano called the score a “f-cking robbery,”.
On a similar note, other fans commented things like, “Those judges deserve to be fired,” and “They did him wrong many times…” The ‘King of Rio’ had lost to Mario Bautista as well at UFC 307, and even that was dubbed as a robbery by the fans. The opening round was for Bautista, and the second was Aldo, but the final round was the one where the judges disputed. After 15 minutes of battle, the judges submitted the 29-28 scores, with two of them seeing Bautista as the winner. From veterans like Conor McGregor and Joe Rogan, everyone was angry that Aldo did not win. McGregor posted, “dirt decision,” while Rogan said that the judges weren’t even looking. This is why the fans think that he might have retired out of sheer exhaustion to prove himself time and time again.
One follower said, “Can’t blame him. All the years of fighting and toll it took on his body, plus he was fighting in a division where older fighters get smoked by the up-and-coming fighters. Will forever miss and respect this legend, wish the UFC treated him better. Didn’t even give him a retirement video or anything,” while another commented, “Bro doesn’t even want to train gi jiu jitsu anymore. He’s surely done.” What do you think about this retirement news?
