The New York Yankees have already been plagued by questionable baserunning habits. And then, there he was, the Yankees’ $5.85 million star who chose his moment to make a strong case for the clubs’ Blunder of the Year nominations. It was chaotic enough that it prompted brutal reactions from two of the franchise’s greats: Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. “Where is the accountability?” asks A-Rod. “If any of us made a mistake [like Jazz], we would be sitting our b— right on the bench.”
It shifted the entire momentum of the game when, on a routine pop fly by Paul Goldschmidt, Jazz Chisholm Jr. was doubled off at first base, which ended the second inning. And that’s exactly where the Yankees seemingly lost their winning odds.
Topping it off, former Yankees legend Derek Jeter also chimed in after Chisholm’s blunder and said, “You have to clean it up. No excuses. You have to play better.” After all, the Bronx bombers were handed an embarrassing 12-13 by the mediocre Miami Marlins, as recently as August 1st.

See, more than the miscues, it’s Chisholm’s flat, no-remorse response after the game that earned the attention. When he was asked if he would do it any differently next time, knowing what he knows now, he said a quick and strict “no.”
Further, he added, “Uh, just trying to be aggressive, already playing with both the middle infielders out there. You know, I saw something that I thought they were going to do. He (Edwards) deked it like he was going to do it (drop it). He didn’t do it, but you know, still trying to be aggressive because I’ve played here before. I know how to field plays, and you know, sometimes you get aggressive and you get caught up, you make an out.”
Chisholm believed that Xavier Edwards would purposely drop Goldy’s pop fly, which would lead to Chisholm at second base. Which didn’t happen. He strayed far away, concluding the double play. According to him, he would’ve advanced effortlessly towards second base if the ball had bounced on the artificial turf. Well, now that you know Chisholm’s take on his miscues, let’s see what manager Aaron Boone has to say.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s stance on Chisholm’s miscues
It was undoubtedly Chisholm’s glaring mistake that did a lot more than contribute to the Yankees’ 2-0 loss to the Marlins. While many made Chisholm the scapegoat, manager Aaron Boone had a different stance altogether.
During the game, Boone was visibly involved in a heated exchange with Chapman near the bat rack. As he was gesturing towards first base, it appeared that he was frustrated with Chisholm’s mistake. However, he later clarified, saying, “The only thing I was saying was, ‘Could we have yelled louder when he gets into the danger zone?’” He said.
Boone has always been calm about any situations with the players. He defended him after the game, saying, “It’s a guy trying to make a play. I get it; it looks bad, and it’s a bad play, but it’s not a case of a guy that’s dogging it. He’s just trying to make a play.”
Now, Boone has barely benched players throughout his tenure. He benched Gleyber Torres back in 308, and that’s a notable exception. It was then perceived as a lack of hustle. This time, Boone believes Chisholm’s play never rose to the benching level.
Boone further emphasized that the club overall has good players. The Yankees are now even with the Los Angeles Angels for the fewest outs (23) on the bases. More than Chisholm’s miscue, the bigger concern has started to loom. The Yankees are currently 60-50, and it’s uncertain if they’re looking like playoff material with that record.
