Yankees Manager Thrown Under Bus as Anthony Volpe Decision Angers Bronx Nation

Anthony Volpe is in his third season with the New York Yankees. And after his long slump, he is only now finding his groove again. However, what was shocking was not his comeback, but what happened after. Because after breaking out of a 0-for-25 slump with a much-needed three-hit performance on Saturday, he learned that he would be out of Sunday’s lineup!

Yes—the same guy who finally looked like himself again was given a day off, and fans did not take the news lightly.

Now, Volpe’s bounce back wasn’t a quiet one. After a rough start to Saturday’s game, he got things rolling with a slow roller down the third base line. Then he followed it up with an opposite-field home run and a flare single to right-center.

This was Anthony Volpe’s first three-hit game in nearly a month. And it came on the heels of a statement from Aaron Boone saying that the shortstop’s timing has been rather off lately. Volpe himself, after the game, mentioned that “It always is a timing thing.” He also added that the biggest part of his approach has been to put the truth he has on himself.

And it showed, with Volpe’s 101 mph homer. Talking about it, he said, “I’ve been trying to hit that ball for a couple of games…. Just see the ball and get a pitch I can handle.” And the at-bat was something then, even Aaron Boone ended up praising. So this is why Sunday’s lineup decision feels so off. Instead of letting Volpe ride through the momentum, the Yankees are pulling him out. And the fans are not happy about it.

New York Yankee fans are unhappy with Volpe being benched

A fan commented sarcastically that after a 3-hit day, Volpe is still ending up missing the next day. And yes, the frustration is real, and it’s there. Volpe finally broke out of a nasty 0-for-25 slump with a three-hit performance that included a homer and also sparked the Yankees, which they needed. So, of course, fans wanted to see him in the lineup. But one has to also understand that planned rest days are not uncommon. But the optics weren’t great here, especially when Volpe was heating up.

One more user chimed in, reminding everyone that Volpe is not in the lineup. The comment actually carries a big sigh. Not seeing Volpe’s name on the lineup card for when they play the Orioles in the finale seems like a gut punch. Some fans are even worried that the Yankees could look for replacements in the draft. Some are even speculating about the Yankees eyeing Ryan Mitchell, a top shortstop prospect. Because, sure, Volpe has shown flashes of promise, but his. 236 average is not something that silences critics either.

A fan mentioned that Volpe finally gets a day off. And to be fair, Volpe has not had a day off since June 9. And history says he handles the rest very well. After his last break, he came back with a 2-for-5 effort. Just earlier this month, he even homered after another rest day. So yes, sitting him might have been part of a larger plan and strategy by New York Yankees’ Aaron Boone.

One person on X mentioned that sitting Volpe after his breakout game is such a Boone thing to do. Well, Boone is known to make controversial calls, and he has sparked long debates. But he said post-game on Saturday itself that he would be sitting Volpe on Sunday. Hence, this was already covered in the press conference. Not a surprise! People just didn’t think that even with the momentum of Volpe, Boone would stick to his decision.

@incarceratedbob sitting Volpe after getting 3 hits yesterday is such a Boone thing to do lmao

One user mentioned that he is glad to see Volpe sitting out the big game yesterday. So, now you know not everyone is fuming. Some fans are sensibly seeing this as a smart management decision. With the team navigating a long stretch and Volpe getting back on track, maybe a rest day will give him a fresh reset. One that helps him extend his success rather than burn out too soon.

So are you all for the Volpe sitting out of the Sunday game decision? Let us know.
